* modal 의 긍정문, 부정문, 의문문, 빈도부사의 위치는 모두 be 동사와 같습니다.

<2> 의미:대부분 두 개 이상의 뜻을가지므로 의미 파악에 주의해야 합니다. 단순히 해석만 하지 말고 ‘능력’, ‘허락’, ‘가능성’ 등으로 의미를 구분하여 기억해야합니다.

* can (be able to):우리 말 ‘할 수 있다’로 해석할 수 있으나 문장마다 의미가 약간씩 다릅니다.

(1) I can swim. (나는 수영을 할 수 있다.) - 능력

(2) I can have free time after I finish my homework.(나는 숙제를 다 한 후에 놀 수 있다.) - 허락

(3) My brother can brake the mirror.(내 동생이 거울을 깨트렸을 수도 있다.) - 가능성

- ability(능력): 운동, 언어, 특기 등 기술 같은 것을 말합니다.
She can jump high. / My dog can understand some words./ He can play tennis.

- permission(허락): ‘~ 해도 된다.' 또는 공손하게 ‘~해도 되나요?’ 로 많이 쓰입니다.
* 허락을 말하는 can/may 가 부정일 때는 ‘~(R)을 할 수 없다'가 아니라 ‘~(R)하면 안된다’로 해석하고 I am sorry. (유감스럽다) 라는 말과 함께 오는 경우가 많습니다.

A: Can I go out with Annie?
B: Yes, you can. / No, you can't.

My mom told me that I could have a rabbit.

A: Can I use your pen?
B: I'm sorry.(=I'm afraid) I can't. This is the only one I have.

- possibility(가능성) : ~ 일 수도 있다 (긍정문) / ~ 일 리가 없다.(부정문) 로 해석합니다.

He can be at home. It is already 10.
He can't be wrong about cars. He is a mechanic.

* can은 근거를 갖고 논리적으로 추측하는 말이어서 아무것도 모르는 상황에서 can을 쓰기는 어렵습니다. 단순한 추측은 may R (R 일지도 몰라.)를 쓰는 것이 좋습니다.
He can like me. (-_-;;) He may like me. (o)

- 기타: 일상적으로 조금 다른 의미(의도)로 쓰이는 표현들입니다. 흔히 쓰이는말입니다. 꼭 기억하도록 합시다.

Can you lend me some money? (요청)
Can you pass me the salt and pepper?
Can you answer the door?
Can I try those shoes on?

Can I help you? (제안)
Can I show you the way to Lake Park?

* 과거는 could R(+) /could not R (-) / Could 주어 R ~?
We can do it. We could do it.
They can not get us. They could not get us.
Can you come with me? Could you come with me?

* could 가 늘 can 의 과거로만 쓰이는 것은 아닙니다. 특히 의문문에서 can 보다 더욱 공손하게 말하기 위해 쓰입니다. - Could you pass me the ball?

* be able to : can의 또 다른 표현으로 의미는 같습니다. can이 다른 modal(조동사)과함께 쓰여야하는 경우에 can의 역할을 합니다.

I will be able to get there by 4.(will+can)
I won't be able to be in your birthday party.
Will you be able to show up tomorrow?

미래를 말하는 어휘가 있으면 will 이 생략되기도 합니다.
I can visit my mom tomorrow. (can visit는 will be able to visit 과 같습니다)

주로 영국식 영어에서 be able to 는 can을 대신 하여 쓸 수 있습니다.
be able to를 쓸 때 be는 주어에 따라서 변해야합니다.

I'm not able to give a speech in front of many people.
He wasn't able to speak a word.
I was not able to get myself in.
You are able to doeverything.

* can'tR vs can R

원어민들이 이야기할 때 can과 can't 는 사실 거의 비슷하게 들려 구분하기가 어렵습니다. 이때 ‘중요한 것은 큰 소리로 말 한다’ 는 원칙을 생각하세요. 즉 긍정인 경우, 의미상 할 수 있는 것이 무엇인지가 중요하므로 can 보다는 뒤따르는 R 즉 동사의 원형이 더 크게, 즉 can R, 반대로 부정인 can't의 경우 not이 중요하므로 동사원형보다 can't 가 더 크게, 즉 can'tR 로 발음하게 됩니다.

다시 말해 긍정문이면 동사원형을 강하게 발음하고 부정문은 can't에서 can을 강하게 그러나 /t/ 소리는 약하게 발음하도록 합니다.

I canjump. I can'tjump.
/kn/ /ken/

* 이 두 소리는 원어민들도 구분이 애매하여 ‘can or can't?' 라고 되묻는 경우가 흔합니다.
