동명사 (gerund) (1) 모양은 동사, 구실은 명사

이름대로 동사의 모습으로(root + ing) 명사 역할을 하는 것이 동명사입니다. 동사와명사의 쓰임을 알고 있다면 동명사가 무엇인지 이미 알고 있는 셈입니다. 나머지 절반은 암기해야 하는 동사와 관용 표현들이 있습니다.

1> 명사로 쓰이는 동명사 - 주어 / 목적어 / 보어가 되는 동명사

1) 주어 - My dog (주어) loves me a lot. 나의 개는
Being (주어) with friends is a wonderful experience. 그와 있는 것은

2) 목적어 - I love cats (목적어) as well. 고양이를
I enjoy watching (목적어) TV. 보는 것을

3) 보어 - My pets are my happiness. 보어: 나의 행복이다.
To believe is to see. 보어 :보는 것
My free time activity is painting. 보어: 그림 그리기이다.

* 한걸음 더: 동명사 (또는 명사)가 보어일 때는 주격 보어로서 주어와 보어는 동일합니다. 위의 문장에서 나의 애완동물은 즉 나의 행복이고 믿는 것과 보는 것은 같습니다. 또 주격 보어는‘Ving 하는 것 / ving 하기’ 라고 해석하므로 ‘이다’ 는 be 동사입니다.



2> 현재 진행형과 동명사

Ving는 현재 진행형으로도 쓰이기 때문에 해석으로 판단해야합니다. 반드시 한 쪽으로만 해석이 가능합니다.

I was running in the park. (나는 공원에서 달리고 있었다.)
running가 동명사라면 ‘나는 공원에서 달리기 이다’ 로 해석되어 전혀 맞지 않습니다.

My favorite sport is running in the park.(내가 제일 좋아하는 운동은 공원에서 달리는 것이다.)
running 이 현재 진행형이라면 ‘내가 제일 좋아하는 운동은 공원에서 달리는 중이다’가 되어 역시 해석이 되지 않습니다.
